 Jack of all Trades
Tools. All kinds of tools. Wrenches, saws, hammers, screwdrivers, planes, gauges, compressors, levels, clamps, crowbars, sprayers, drills. I love them all. I love working with them all. I always have. Fixing, building, creating, improving. My spare time is frequently filled with the joy of using my hands and my mind to make things or to make things better. I’m Home Depot’s best friend. Home Depot is my playground. Working with my hands gives my conscious mind the downtime it needs to later approach my more cerebral work from a fresh perspective, and the result is that some part of my world has improved from the effort.
I’ve been doing home improvement projects since my late teens when I gave my parents a set of gas fireplace logs for Christmas and then installed them myself. That took a lot of trust on my parents’ part, considering that I had to route pipe through solid brick and tap into their gas lines to provide fuel for the logs. That was thirty-some years ago. They still live in the house-and they still use the logs. Apparently, I got it right. The sense of satisfaction and accomplishment that came from that first home improvement project were the foundation for countless projects that would follow. Framing, carpentry, cabinetry, Sheetrock, painting, plumbing, electrical, roofing. I’ve done it all and my goal has always been to apply sufficient research, thought, planning and care that my results are something I can be proud of.
My experience with home improvement has dovetailed nicely with my interest in real estate investing, enabling me to understand the work required to prepare a property for resale and helping me recognize potentially serious problems that could turn a seemingly good buy into a financial disaster. My biggest challenge lies in resisting the temptation to perform the improvements myself rather than spending my time looking for the next bargains to focus on!
